More than 500 Nigerians have already been cleared for evacuation as the Federal Government steps up efforts to bring citizens home amid renewed xenophobic tensions in South Africa.
The Federal Government has approved five evacuation flights to bring Nigerians home from South Africa following fresh concerns over xenophobic tensions in the country, cbinewstv reports.
Speaking with journalists on Sunday, the spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, said the move is part of ongoing efforts to assist Nigerians who have expressed a desire to return home.
According to him, the screening and verification exercise for registered applicants has now been extended until Wednesday, 10 June 2026, to accommodate more Nigerians seeking voluntary repatriation.
Ebienfa revealed that more than 500 Nigerians have already been screened and cleared for evacuation.
He also disclosed that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved five evacuation flights, all of which will be operated by Air Peace.
The first flight is expected to leave Johannesburg on Monday evening and could transport about 270 passengers, provided all necessary permits and clearances are secured.
Providing an update on the process, Ebienfa said the extension was necessary due to the growing number of Nigerians registering for the exercise.
“So far, over 500 persons have been screened and cleared. Mr President has approved five evacuation flights that will be operated by Air Peace, and the first flight, which will airlift about 270 passengers, is expected to leave Johannesburg on Monday evening if the necessary permits and clearance are secured,” he stated.
He added that further details regarding departure and arrival schedules would be communicated once final approvals are received from the Nigerian mission in South Africa.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs had initially planned to conclude the screening exercise on Saturday but decided to extend the deadline to ensure all eligible applicants complete the verification process.
Officials say registration and screening are still ongoing as more Nigerians continue to sign up for voluntary evacuation.
