Fuel prices have been squeezing Nigerian households and transport operators. Now, the Federal Government says it is stepping in with a 30-day petrol discount and a plan to make pump prices less volatile.
There could be some relief at the pump, at least for the next 30 days.
The Federal Government says it is offering a discount on petrol sold by the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited, with public transport operators getting priority.
Finance Minister and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Taiwo Oyedele, says the arrangement is not a return to fuel subsidy. He says NNPC will instead sell the product at cost during the initial 30-day period.
The government is also negotiating a ₦1,350-per-litre ceiling on petrol’s ex-gantry or landing cost, with monthly reviews.
Now, that does not mean motorists will suddenly buy petrol for ₦1,350 a litre. The figure applies before the product reaches filling stations and is designed to reduce the impact of sudden changes in global crude prices and the exchange rate.
The government says refiners and importers could initially absorb costs above the ceiling and recover them later when market conditions improve.
Why does this matter? Because petrol prices affect much more than motorists. Transport fares, food distribution, small businesses and household budgets can all feel the knock-on effect.
Since Nigeria ended its long-standing petrol subsidy regime in 2023, fuel prices have become more exposed to market and exchange-rate pressures, contributing to higher living costs.
The government says the latest measures are about stability, not a return to subsidy.
The 30-day discount is the immediate relief. The bigger test will be whether the proposed pricing mechanism can keep fuel costs predictable, and whether Nigerians actually feel that difference in their daily lives.
