She made feminism front page news and never looked back.
Gloria Steinem has died aged 92. Her foundation said she passed away peacefully at home in New York on Wednesday surrounded by loved ones.
Born 25 March 1934 in Ohio, Steinem started as a freelance journalist before co founding Ms magazine in 1972.
At a time when women’s magazines focused on beauty and housework, Ms put equal pay, domestic violence and abortion on the cover. The first issue sold 300,000 copies in days.
She also co founded the Womens Action Alliance in 1971. She had an illegal abortion in London at 22, later welcomed Roe v Wade in 1973 and lived to see it overturned in 2022. She campaigned for same sex marriage, equal pay and an end to female genital mutilation.
A defining voice of second wave feminism in America.
