Got a hotel, event centre or hall for hire in Abuja? The FCTA says if you let the wrong crowd in, you could lose the land itself.
If you’re in the hospitality business in the capital, this one’s for you.
The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has issued a blunt warning to owners of hotels, event centres and other public facilities: stop hosting illegal organisations, or risk having your Certificate of Occupancy revoked.
In a statement on Friday, May 29, released by Lere Olayinka, Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications and Social Media to FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, the administration said land in Abuja was allocated strictly for lawful use, not for groups that could threaten public peace.
According to the FCTA, security agencies are already stepping up operations across the city, and the use of hotels and halls will now be “closely monitored.”
“In view of the need to further ensure the security of lives and properties in the FCT and sustain the efforts of security agencies in this regard, usage of Event Centres, Hotels and other public buildings will now be closely monitored,” the statement read.
The message is simple: verify who is booking you. The FCTA wants managers to check the legal status of any group before confirming a reservation, and to keep proper records of every transaction.
With politics heating up, there’s a specific heads-up for the 2027 build-up. Hoteliers and centre managers are told to deal only with the leadership of political parties recognised by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), no factions, no shadow groups.
“For instance, in this political season, owners of Event Centres and Hotels in particular must ensure that they only deal with Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) recognised leadership of political parties in respect of the use of their facilities, and proper records of transactions must be kept,” Olayinka added.
Bottom line: the FCTA isn’t just threatening fines anymore, it’s threatening the title to your property.
