Fancy trading a lifetime of courtside seats for one blurry selfie with Wemby? That's exactly what a fan tried in San Antonio, and the NBA came down hard.
So, picture this. It's Game 1 of the NBA Finals, fourth quarter, San Antonio Spurs vs New York Knicks at the Frost Bank Center, tension is through the roof... and some lad decides it's the perfect moment to sprint on with his mobile phone.
He made a beeline for Victor Wembanyama, and Knicks centre Mitchell Robinson was right there too, trying to grab a quick selfie mid-play. Security were on him in seconds and marched him straight out. It happened midway through the final quarter, and yes, it actually stopped the game.
The NBA didn't mess about. On Thursday the league confirmed the fan, who police in Bexar County say is a juvenile, so his name won't be released, was arrested for intentionally interfering with a lawful gathering and criminal trespass, and he's now banned for life from every NBA arena.
And he wasn't the only one. The league said a second person involved in the stunt gets the same punishment, lifetime ban, no appeals, no second chances.
Wemby's reaction was pure Wemby. The French star admitted he was completely thrown.
"I've never been in that situation," he said after the game. "I didn't know how to act."
He even compared it to that bizarre moment in his rookie year when a bat flew across the court, "It really surprised me, almost as much as that time a bat crossed the court".
Spurs head coach Mitch Johnson was far less bothered about the whole thing. He basically shrugged it off, saying security handled it and "everybody moved on to the next play." Classic coach behaviour, don't give the distraction any oxygen.
There was more drama too. The NBA is also reviewing a separate fourth-quarter flare-up where Knicks guard Jalen Brunson got into a heated exchange with a courtside spectator and had to complain to referee Scott Foster. That incident briefly paused play for about a minute and a half before they restarted with a jump ball.
Moral of the story? The league is cracking down hard on fan behaviour in the Finals. One selfie, two lifetime bans, and a very awkward story to tell your mates.
