12-year-old student dies after alleged bullying incident at Federal Government College Ikot Ekpene.
Tension has gripped Federal Government College Ikot Ekpene following the death of a 12-year-old student, Ufokobong Edwin Godwin, who allegedly sustained injuries after being bullied by a senior student.
CBI News reports that the incident reportedly occurred before the Easter break when the Junior Secondary School 2 student was allegedly assaulted by a Senior Secondary School 3 student over his refusal to share provisions.
According to accounts from students, the victim suffered a neck injury during the confrontation and was later hospitalised on Easter Sunday, where he died.
A hostel mate said the altercation began during the examination period after the senior student demanded food from him.
“A senior student asked the boy for provisions, but he refused. The student reportedly hit him on the neck, after which he went into a coma,” the source told Vanguard.
Another account alleged that the senior student repeatedly struck the boy on the neck until he collapsed.
“The senior student descended on him, hitting his neck until he fainted three times before other students raised the alarm,” the student added.
The victim was said to have regained consciousness and returned to school before the holiday, with his parents reportedly unaware of the incident when they picked him up.
After returning home, the boy began complaining of severe neck pain.
A family source said his condition worsened despite initial treatment with pain relief medication.
“The boy kept shouting ‘my neck, my neck’. When the pain became severe, the father took him to the hospital where he died on Easter Sunday,” the source said.
Medical personnel later confirmed that the death was linked to complications from blood clots around the neck.
The school’s principal, Jude Ezeogu, described the incident as tragic.
“It’s an unfortunate incident. The entire school is in a mourning mood. He is our child, he is a Nigerian child, so we are deeply touched by his demise,” he said.
Ezeogu added that the school management committee would review the circumstances surrounding the case and communicate its findings.
Meanwhile, the Nigeria Police Force spokesperson in Akwa Ibom State, Timfon John, said the command would verify the incident, though no further details had been released.
The family of the deceased has called on the Federal Government to investigate the matter and ensure justice is served.
“I cannot talk now. I am calling on the Federal Government to intervene for justice. I will talk at the appropriate time,” the boy’s father said.
