Authorities investigate alleged misuse of funds linked to stadium construction contract.
The former president of the football federation in North Macedonia, Muamed Sejdini, was arrested on Thursday as authorities investigate allegations of embezzlement.
Police and prosecutors confirmed the arrest on suspicion of financial misconduct but did not release further details about the alleged offences.
In February, the Football Federation of Macedonia banned Sejdini from holding positions within its assembly for two years following accusations tied to a 3.3 million euro contract for building a stadium stand in Ohrid.
According to the federation, the agreement he allegedly signed without proper authorisation included a clause allowing an advance payment of 700,000 euros.
The 56 year old led the organisation from 2019 until stepping down in 2024.
Prosecutors said the investigation is ongoing and that more information will be made public once it is concluded.
