A routine school run turned into a nightmare in Ibadan this morning after gunmen snatched a former minister's younger sister and her twin boys in broad daylight.
It's the kind of news that stops you in your tracks.
The family of Chief Adebayo Adelabu, former Minister of Power and a prominent APC governorship aspirant in Oyo State, has confirmed that his youngest sister was abducted alongside her children.
According to a statement published by cbinewstv, Mrs Olaide Busayo Adegoke John-Paul, 43, and her 12-year-old twin sons, Peter and Paul, were taken at about 7:30 a.m. on Wednesday while she was driving them to school in Ibadan.
The family's media aide, Femi Awogboro, said armed men forcefully stopped her car and whisked the three away. He described the incident as "deeply distressing" for the whole Adelabu family.
"Immediately the incident was reported, all relevant security and law enforcement agencies were duly contacted. We are pleased to confirm that security operatives have swung into action and preliminary investigations have commenced in earnest," the family said.
Mrs John-Paul is the youngest of five children of Mrs Olufunmilayo Aduke Adegoke Adelabu.
She previously worked with the Central Bank of Nigeria and First Bank Pension Custodian before voluntarily retiring last year. The family says she had recently relocated to Ibadan with her boys whilst preparing to join her husband, who had earlier moved to the United States.
The Adelabus say they are confident the security agencies will bring them home safely, but they've made a passionate appeal for calm.
"We respectfully appeal to members of the public to remain calm, avoid speculation, and refrain from circulating unverified information that may jeopardise ongoing security operations," the statement added.
Meanwhile, the Oyo State Police Command has confirmed the abduction. Police spokesperson DSP Olayinka Ayanlade told cbinews.tv that the Commissioner of Police immediately mobilised tactical teams to the scene, where the victim's vehicle was recovered.
He assured residents that everything possible is being done to secure their release and arrest the attackers, and urged anyone with credible information to come forward.
