When Nigeria’s top cop says, “I’ve never seen anything like this,” you know something big is happening in Enugu.
So, the Inspector General of Police, Tunji Disu, just paid a visit to Enugu — and he couldn’t believe his eyes.
Gov Peter Mbah’s administration has built this seriously slick Command and Control Centre for keeping tabs on the whole state, and Disu says it’s on another level. He was touring the facility with Gov Mbah, his security team, and AGF Lateef Fagbemi, SAN, when he admitted he was genuinely surprised.
“I must confess I’m surprised we’ve got this kind of facility here,” Disu said. “I worked in Lagos and know we had something similar there, but the advancement of this one amazed me.”
What’s got him so impressed? We’re talking a control room kitted out with AI cameras that can see practically everywhere in Enugu — forests included. You can zoom in up to 40% and spot things nearly 30 kilometres away. No corner of the state is “ungoverned” from that room, apparently. There are officers assigned to specific zones, just watching the feeds and keeping records of wins they’ve scored through the system.
“I wish every state in Nigeria would come here and see what’s happening — and emulate it,” he added. “I’ve seen AI cameras. I’ve seen dedicated officers watching what’s happening. I’ve seen the records of successes.”
He didn’t stop there. Disu also gave a big thumb-up to Enugu’s Distress Response Squad. That’s the special police unit with over 150 vehicles, all fitted with AI-enabled cameras linked straight back to the Command Centre. He even tested them on the spot — asked them to move to a part of town without telling them he was listening in.
“Within two, three, four minutes, they were there,” he said. “It shows their efficiency. They’ve shown capacity, and I thank the governor for investing in the security of the people.”
For context, he used to command the Rapid Response Force in Lagos, but he cheekily dodged saying which unit is better. “The most important thing is they’ve shown efficiency,” he laughed.
Quick fact: The Enugu State Command and Control Centre was officially opened by President Bola Tinubu on 4 January 2025 during his visit to the state.
