Planning to move around Enugu North this Saturday? You might want to check this first. The state government has locked down six LGAs for the senatorial bye-election.
If you live in Enugu North Senatorial District, take note. The Enugu State Government has announced a restriction of movement across all six local government areas in the district ahead of Saturday’s bye-election, cbinews.tv reports.
The announcement came on Friday from the Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Chidiebere Onyia, through a public service statement. He confirmed the directive covers all 102 electoral wards in the senatorial district.
“The Government of Enugu State wishes to inform the general public that the Enugu North Senatorial District By-Election will hold on Saturday, June 20, 2026,” Onyia said.
But not everyone is affected. The government has exempted INEC officials, security personnel, accredited election observers, journalists, and anyone else officially authorised to carry out election duties.
The state is urging residents and eligible voters to stay peaceful and follow electoral guidelines throughout the exercise. Political parties, candidates and their supporters have also been asked to remain law abiding before, during and after the poll.
Security agencies are already on notice. “Security agencies have been directed to ensure strict compliance with this directive,” Onyia stated. They’ve been told to enforce the restriction and maintain law and order during the election.
“The people and residents of the district are encouraged to exercise their civic responsibility peacefully and in accordance with electoral guidelines,” he added.
The Enugu North Senatorial District includes Igbo Etiti, Igbo Eze North, Igbo Eze South, Nsukka, Udenu and Uzo Uwani local government areas. INEC is conducting the bye-election to fill the vacant senatorial seat.
The state government thanked residents for their understanding and cooperation and wished the district a peaceful and successful bye-election.
