Enugu is heating up - and not in a good way - but the police are not playing. Three suspected armed robbers and cultists have landed in the net in separate sting operations across the state.

The Enugu State Police Command says it’s been a busy few days, with operations leading to the recovery of two firearms, 15 live rounds, a bunch of ATM cards and other dodgy exhibits.

According to police spokesperson SP Daniel Ndukwe, here’s how it went down:

First up, 30-year-old Goodluck Hyacinth was stopped during a routine stop-and-search at First Bus Stop, Abakpa, Enugu, on August 23. Officers found seven rounds of 9mm live ammunition on him while he was riding in a commercial tricycle. Talk about a wrong ride.

Then, at about 3am on August 24, operatives raided a suspected criminal hideout at Akpaoga-Nike in Enugu East LGA after getting credible intel. The suspects bolted on sighting the police, but left behind an imitation firearm and several ATM cards.

And in another operation on August 17, officers from the Department of Operations intercepted a tricycle carrying four young men along Lagos Street by Winners Junction, Ogui, Enugu. Two of them escaped, but 24-year-old Okeke Stephen Chidera and 22-year-old Ofefe Mathew Chukwuemeka weren’t so lucky. Police recovered a cut-to-size firearm and eight live cartridges from them. The duo reportedly confessed to being members of the Neo Black Movement (NBM) cult group.

The Command says efforts are underway to nab the fleeing suspects, while those in custody will be arraigned once investigations are wrapped up.

Reacting, the Commissioner of Police, CP Mamman Bitrus Giwa, commended his men for their vigilance and assured residents that the clampdown on criminal elements will continue. He also urged the public to stay vigilant and keep sharing credible information.
