No suspension, no expulsion, no case to answer- that's the verdict from the Enugu NDC leadership. But who exactly tried to suspend one of the party's biggest names?

So, what's really happening in Enugu NDC?

If you've seen that rumour flying around about Dr SKC Ogbonnia being suspended, the state Chairman says, ignore it completely.

Speaking to cbinews.tv, the Chairman of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) in Enugu State, Dr Johnpaul Anih, has dismissed the reports as pure fiction, describing those behind it as a “faceless committee of friends” with zero constitutional power to act.

According to Anih, Ogbonnia remains not just a bona fide member, but a cherished and respected leader of the party. He has neither been suspended nor expelled. Full stop.

He said the leadership had to speak up because the peddlers of the story seem hell-bent on misleading the public and stirring confusion in the party.

Let's be clear, Anih noted, Ogbonnia has not been found guilty of any offence, nor has he engaged in any anti-party activity that would warrant discipline.

And then he asked the questions that really matter:

Which part of the NDC Constitution gave them the power to suspend anyone? Did any properly constituted organ of the party even meet? Was any charge brought against Ogbonnia? Was he given a fair hearing to defend himself?

His words: “Where is the resolution of the competent party organ? Where is the disciplinary process? Where is the notice of hearing? Where is the decision of the appropriate authority? There is none.”

For the Enugu chapter, this is nothing more than “political theatre”, and it won't be recognised. Membership alone doesn't give you the right to suspend another member — that power only comes through the party's recognised and properly constituted organs.

Anih accused those behind the move of trying to manufacture authority they simply don't possess and urged them to respect the party's constitution.

While that drama plays out, he says the legitimate leadership is focused on the real work, strengthening structures, mobilising members, and preparing for forthcoming elections.

His final word: “Dr SKC Ogbonnia remains a bona fide member and a cherished leader of the party.”
