Enugu LG Polls 2026: Peaceful Voting, Hitches, and Why It’s a Dress Rehearsal for 2027

Enugu went to the polls today, but this was about more than chairmen and councillors. Was this a test run for 2027?
So, here’s what happened. Enugu State held its local government elections on Saturday 26th September 2026, across all 17 LGAs and 260 wards. On the ballot, 17 chairmanship seats and 260 councillorship seats, with seven political parties taking part.
Governor Peter Mbah, voting in his hometown Ashishi Owo in Nkanu East, said reports from across the state showed a peaceful, orderly process. His take? Voters know the process belongs to them. And that, he said, could be a signpost for 2027.
Hon. Osinachi Nnajieze told cbinews.tv turnout was encouraging, he’s hoping new councils will open more doors for young people. Hon. Robert Alum at Okpara Square said officials arrived early and voting was fast and seamless. Even Accredited observer Comrade Jude Okafor praised punctuality, but flagged a familiar problem — we need stronger voter sensitisation.
Special Adviser Rt. Hon. Paul Nnajofor said it was smooth and urged incoming chairmen to turn mandates into real grassroots development.
Historically, LG polls in Enugu and across Nigeria have suffered from low turnout and late materials. Today, the state tried to fix that, restriction of movement from 6am to 4pm, massive police deployment across all 17 LGAs and over 2,500 NSCDC personnel.
But old challenges popped up again. cbinews.tv gathered reports of late arrival of materials in Agu Abor, controversy over ballot papers in Enugu South, alleged multiple voting at Coal Camp and ballot destruction in a few polling units.
For Enugu, ENSIEC says it has distributed materials to all 17 council areas. The question now is collation and credibility.
For Nigeria, this is the bigger picture. With general elections in 2027, Enugu’s exercise is a real-world test of three things: timely logistics, voter confidence, and whether people will actually show up when it’s not a presidential race. Fix sensitisation, fix result-sheet handling, and 2027 looks brighter.
