Motorists in Nigeria's Enugu State now risk a hefty ₦500,000 fine, vehicle impoundment, and even psychiatric evaluation for driving against traffic as the state government intensifies its crackdown on one-way traffic violations.
CBI News notes that the Commissioner for Transport, Obi Ozor, said the enforcement drive is aimed at reducing the alarming rate of road accidents and restoring discipline on Enugu roads.
According to Ozor, despite billions invested in dual carriageways, medians, and improved road infrastructure, many motorists still dangerously violate traffic regulations, especially in areas like Abakpa and the Penoks axis.
He revealed that offenders may also undergo psychiatric assessments to determine whether substance abuse or mental health issues contributed to their actions before reclaiming their vehicles after payment of the fine.
The commissioner stressed that the policy is not designed to generate revenue but to save lives, warning that the government would continue strict enforcement until motorists fully comply with traffic laws.
Authorities have also launched public awareness campaigns in collaboration with transport unions and media organisations to promote road safety across the state.
