You cannot commit a crime in Enugu and get away with it; that is the strong message from Governor Peter Mbah after security forces arrested three suspected kidnappers behind the attack on a Catholic church in Affa.
Here is what happened:
In a breakthrough, security forces in Enugu State have arrested three members of the notorious gang that attacked St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Inoyi-Affa in Udi LGA on 2nd August 2026.
According to cbinews.tv, the suspects were nabbed during a joint operation led by the Department of State Services (DSS), alongside the Nigerian Army, the Police, the Enugu State Forest Guard and other agencies. The operation turned into a gun battle, during which one member of the gang was neutralised. Four AK-47 rifles and a large cache of ammunition were also recovered.
Governor Peter Mbah gave the commendation on Monday night after visiting the state DSS headquarters to see the arrested suspects.
Represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Chidiebere Onyia, the Governor confirmed that two of the three victims abducted during the attack, Seminarian Lawrence Igbo and Mr Emmanuel Onwudi, have regained their freedom. The SSG disclosed that the victims have fully identified the men in custody as their abductors.
Speaking on behalf of the Governor, Prof. Onyia reassured residents that the administration will continue to prioritise and heavily invest in the security of lives and property.
He issued a stern warning to criminals and their collaborators:
“We made it very clear that if criminality becomes your venture, Enugu State is not the location to do that business. We will pursue you, we will make sure we bring you to justice... You can run, but cannot hide for long.”
He also warned informants and those who aid kidnappers that investigations are ongoing and they will be tracked down and prosecuted as part of the syndicate.
The Governor showered praise on the DSS, Army, Police, Forest Guard and other security agencies for their gallantry, cooperation and commitment to making Enugu State uncomfortable for criminals.
