Report says FA poised to back German coach before World Cup in North America.
England football coach Thomas Tuchel is set to sign a new contract that will keep him in charge of the national team until 2028, according to a report in The Times.
An update on the former Chelsea manager’s position is expected from the Football Association later on Thursday.
Extending his deal ahead of this year’s World Cup in North America would underline the FA’s confidence in Tuchel as he attempts to lead England to their first major trophy in almost 60 years.
Tuchel was appointed as Gareth Southgate’s successor in October 2024 and said in his first interview that he wanted to add a second star to the England shirt by winning the 2026 World Cup.
England’s only major international title came at the 1966 World Cup on home soil, when they defeated West Germany at Wembley.
Tuchel’s side cruised through qualification, winning all eight matches in a group that included Albania, Serbia, Latvia and Andorra.
Sterner challenges are expected at the World Cup, with co hosts Mexico a potential last 16 opponent if England top their group, followed by a possible quarter final against five time champions Brazil.
Tuchel has also been linked with a move to Manchester United following the dismissal of Ruben Amorim, despite an improvement in results under caretaker manager Michael Carrick.
A new contract with England would effectively rule out any post World Cup switch to Old Trafford.
