Grab your popcorn, Nollywood star Emeka Ike is chasing N10bn over alleged leaked voter details, and the court just hit pause again.
So, here’s the gist, Nollywood actor Emeka Ike’s big N10bn legal battle just got pushed back again.
A Federal High Court in Abuja adjourned his fundamental rights suit to 22 July, all because INEC didn’t show up this week. The case, filed against both INEC and Lere Olayinka, media aide to FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, is over claims that Ike’s private voter info was posted online without his say-so..
What sparked it? Screenshots popped up on social media showing Ike’s voter registration being transferred from Imo State to the FCT. Ike says Olayinka shared the details on his official X handle, allegedly pulled from a restricted INEC admin portal. He’s now demanding N10bn for breach of privacy, plus a takedown of the post and a public apology.
When the matter came up before Justice S.O. Ibrahim on Wednesday, Ike’s lawyer, L.T. Adeh, told the court they’d served hearing notices on both sides. Problem is, INEC was a no-show. Adeh asked for a short adjournment so the electoral body could come and defend itself.
Olayinka’s counsel, Akpama Ekwe, wasn’t against the adjournment but said he was ready to go ahead anyway. He even urged the judge to set a hearing date, arguing you can’t force INEC to appear.
Justice Ibrahim wasn’t having it, though. He said a brief adjournment was only fair, just to give INEC a chance to be heard. He’s now ordered that INEC be served all the court papers ahead of the next date, 22 July, for further mention.
After the hearing, both lawyers had plenty to say. Ekwe called the evidence “inadmissible” and insisted his client did nothing wrong. According to him, what Olayinka posted was already public and didn’t actually contain personal data, just Ike’s name, a transfer number, and a passport photo. “There is actually no case against my client,” he told reporters.
He also pointed out that INEC itself had said there was no cyberattack or server breach, just misuse of internal access credentials.
On the flip side, Ike’s lawyer Adeh reckons INEC is dodging because “it has no defence”. He’s confident the case will set a precedent to stop voter data breaches. And apparently, Ike was being generous asking for only N10bn.
“It is very possible that whoever accessed this thing must have also been able to access other records. So it is not just Emeka Ike,” Adeh said. “We want to use Emeka Ike’s issue and also ensure that this kind of thing is put in check.”
So for now, we wait till 22 July to see if INEC turns up.
