Tensions are rising following a public face-off between the immediate past Governor of Kaduna State, Nasir El-Rufai, and the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu.
The former governor had, during a television interview, alleged that he knew individuals tapping the phone conversations of the NSA, a claim that has sparked widespread reactions and stirred concerns over national security.
Meanwhile, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission commenced an investigation into alleged misappropriation of funds during his tenure in office, a development that has further intensified political debates across the country.
In Abuja, Nigeria's federal Capital, CBI News spoke to residents who expressed divided opinions on the matter.
While some condemned the former governor’s comments, describing them as reckless and potentially dangerous to national security, others argue that the ongoing probe and reported detention amount to a calculated attempt to silence a vocal opposition figure.
In contrast, Rafiu Tijani maintained that the former governor crossed the line with his remarks, emphasising the high level of sensitivity attached to the office of the National Security Adviser currently occupied by Nuhu Ribadu.
According to him, statements suggesting surveillance of such a strategic office carry serious national security implications and should not be taken lightly.
Rafiu also dismissed claims that the ongoing investigation by the EFCC into the tenure of Nasir El-Rufai amounts to persecution of opposition voices.
He insisted that accountability must not be politicised.
In his submission, Peter Ameh threw his weight behind the charges against El-Rufai, stressing that allegations involving the interception or tapping of communications are serious offences under the law.
He added that such actions are illegal except in instances where proper authorisation has been granted by relevant security and judicial authorities.
He warned that any deviation from established legal procedures poses a threat to national security and the rule of law.
As the situation unfolds, questions linger over accountability, political rivalry, and the broader implications for Nigeria’s democratic space.
