Motorists in Lagos may soon face major traffic disruption as the Federal Government considers shutting down a section of the busy Eko Bridge after discovering severe structural damage that poses a serious safety risk to commuters.
CBI News learnt that the Federal Government may completely shut down one carriageway of Lagos’ Eko Bridge after officials discovered severe structural damage affecting about eight bridge piles.
According to the Federal Controller of Works in Lagos, Mr. Olufemi Dare, the damaged piles have lost their concrete covering, exposing reinforcement bars and putting road users at risk.
The final decision now rests with the Minister of Works, Sen. Dave Umahi, who is expected to inspect the bridge during his visit to Lagos.
Meanwhile, the FG has also confirmed that Carter Bridge will be demolished and rebuilt after being declared “irredeemable” due to age and structural deterioration.
China Civil Engineering Construction Company has emerged as the preferred contractor for the reconstruction project.
The Minister will also inspect Marine Bridge and assess progress on the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway project.
