If you ride an okada or keke in Ekiti, the clock is ticking. Register your biometrics by July 18 or risk being off the road.
The Ekiti State Government has told all commercial motorcycle and tricycle operators to register and complete biometric data capture by 18 July, cbinews.tv reports.
It’s part of a wider push to clamp down on criminal activity and tighten up security across the state, says Commissioner for Transportation Kehinde Ajobiewe.
Speaking at a stakeholders’ meeting in Ado-Ekiti on Friday, Ajobiewe said the exercise will “strengthen security, enhance public safety and improve regulation of the transportation sector.” The directive was also confirmed in a statement from the ministry.
He called on union leaders to get their members signed up before the deadline. “The Ministry of Transportation will ensure that every operator is properly screened and issued a valid riding permit upon completion of the registration process,” he added.
Beyond security, the commissioner said the biometric drive will give government reliable data for transport planning and help sort out long-standing issues in the sector. He reiterated Governor Biodun Oyebanji’s commitment to “strengthening security, promoting an orderly transport system and improving the welfare of transport operators in the state.”
The meeting brought together key players, including the ministry’s Permanent Secretary Bayo Abulola, representatives from the Police and Federal Road Safety Corps, Okada Riders Association Chairman Kunle Asaolu, and Tricycle Operators Association Chairman Akinola Talabi.
Okadas and tricycles are a big part of how Ekiti moves. But concerns that unregistered operators are being used by criminal elements have pushed the state to roll out biometric registration as part of broader safety measures.
