Dump your rubbish in the street in Abeokuta and you could end up cleaning the court. That is exactly what happened to eight people this week.
Eight people have been ordered to do community service after they were caught dumping waste on the streets of Abeokuta, cbinews.tv reports.
An Ogun State Magistrate’s Court sitting in Isabo handed down the sentence for indiscriminate disposal of waste in public areas of the state capital.
The offenders were taken to court on a two count charge by Sanitarian Kehinde Ogunsola, the Medical Officer of Health at the Ogun State Waste Management Authority, known as OGWAMA. He told the court they were caught dumping waste on public roads between 6:15 a.m. and 8:05 a.m. in the Isale Igbein, Car Wash and Abiola Way areas.
Ogunsola said the dumping caused a terrible smell, attracted flies and created conditions that could spread diseases like cholera. He added that waste dumped like that also contributes to flooding, which puts lives and property at risk. It is an offence under the Public Health Law of Ogun State 2006 and Section 34(1) of the OGWAMA Law 2020.
Magistrate A.K. Araba found all eight guilty. They are Oyebanjo Abidemi, Aminat Adewusi, Aminat Olarewaju, Omolana Olusola, Abiola Moridiya, Olaogun Mary, Abiodun Aromokun and Iwenya Sylvester.
Instead of jail time, the court ordered them to carry out community service within the premises of the Isabo Magistrate Court. But there is a twist. The magistrate said their photographs while doing the community service must be put up on the court’s notice board. And if any of them is caught doing it again, they will go straight to prison with no option of a fine.
Reacting to the judgment, the Special Adviser to the Ogun State Governor and Managing Director of OGWAMA, Hon. Farouk Adeniyi Akintunde, praised the judiciary for backing the state’s waste laws. He said OGWAMA will now step up enforcement across Ogun to tackle the environmental problems caused by improper waste disposal.
Akintunde also had a message for residents. He urged people to use designated waste managers in their area and warned that anyone who keeps dumping refuse in unauthorised spots will be prosecuted.
