As Muslims prepare for Eid-el-Kabir celebrations, many residents in Jos say the rising cost of rams is making this year’s Sallah difficult for ordinary families.
CBI News TV reports that residents of Jos are expressing concern over the sharp increase in the prices of rams ahead of the Eid-el-Kabir celebration, with many calling on the government to address inflation, reduce fuel prices, and improve the nation’s economic situation.
CBI News Correspondent, Abideen Muhammad, visited Yan Shanu Market, one of the biggest livestock markets in Jos, where both buyers and traders spoke about the economic challenges affecting sales and purchases this festive season.
One of the buyers, Kayode Alabi, said the prices of rams have risen significantly compared to previous years, forcing many families to consider cheaper alternatives for the Sallah celebration.
Another buyer, Paul Anoke, who visited the market for the first time, said he was shocked by the high prices, describing them as far beyond his expectations.
Reacting, the Chairman of the Livestock Association at Yan Shanu Market, Alhaji Kawu Muhammad, blamed the increase in ram prices on rising transportation costs.
“The transport fare that used to cost one hundred thousand naira now costs five hundred thousand naira. Also, a ram that was previously sold for one hundred and fifty thousand naira is now being sold for three hundred and fifty thousand naira.”
The leader of livestock vendors in the market, Sulaiman Muhammad, also revealed that patronage has dropped drastically compared to previous years, as traders now spend long hours at the market without making sales.
“Sincerely, unlike previous years when there was patronage, someone can now go out ten times without selling a single ram.”
Both Kayode Alabi and Paul Anoke appealed to the government to reduce fuel prices, tackle inflation, and create better economic conditions for Nigerians.
Eid-el-Kabir, also known as the Festival of Sacrifice, is one of the most significant celebrations for Muslims around the world. The festival is marked by prayers, family gatherings, and the slaughtering of rams in remembrance of Prophet Ibrahim’s obedience to Allah.
