Al-Sisi warns crude could exceed $200 as Gulf tensions threaten global energy routes.
Egypt’s president, Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, on Monday urged U.S. President Donald Trump to intervene to stop the Iran war, warning that fears of oil prices climbing above $200 a barrel are not exaggerated.
Highlighting the impact of supply shortages and rising costs, Sisi pointed to analysts’ concerns that the price of crude could surpass $200, stressing that such projections should be taken seriously.
Egypt, a longstanding recipient of U.S. military aid and support from Gulf allies, has condemned Iranian attacks on Gulf Arab states and stepped up diplomatic efforts to prevent a broader regional conflict.
The secretary-general of the Gulf Cooperation Council, Jasem Mohamed Albudaiwi, also called on the international community to safeguard key maritime routes. He condemned Iran’s closure of the Strait of Hormuz and its attacks on regional energy infrastructure.
Speaking virtually at the conference, Albudaiwi described Iranian actions as a global threat, warning that targeting energy facilities and disrupting one of the world’s most critical oil transit corridors violates international law and endangers global energy security.
The GCC, which includes Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Kuwait, Oman and Bahrain, has faced repeated drone and missile attacks. The closure of the Strait of Hormuz has severely disrupted a route that previously carried about a fifth of the world’s oil supply.
