Fresh military activity near the Israel–Egypt border is drawing attention, as Egypt stages high-intensity live-fire exercises in the Sinai Peninsula—raising questions about regional security despite coordination with Israel.

CBI News notes that Egypt has conducted large-scale live-fire military exercises near its border with Israel, as tensions continue to simmer across the region.

The drills, known as the “Badr 2026 tactical manoeuvres,” took place in the Sinai Peninsula and involved a wide range of military assets, including army units, special forces, fighter jets, and armored tanks.

Egypt’s Defence Minister, Ashraf Salem Zaher, supervised the main phase of the operation, describing it as part of ongoing efforts to maintain combat readiness and strengthen operational efficiency.

According to Zaher, the exercises are designed to reassure citizens of the military’s preparedness to defend the nation across all strategic fronts, particularly in light of evolving regional challenges.

While the drills were carried out in coordination with Israel under the framework of the 1979 Egypt-Israel Peace Treaty—which regulates military deployment zones in Sinai—they have nonetheless sparked concern in some Israeli media circles due to their proximity to the border.

Despite decades of diplomatic relations since the landmark treaty, ties between the two countries are often described by analysts as a “cold peace,” marked by cooperation on security but limited public warmth.
