EFCC Launches Probe Into Alleged Assault of Health Workers at Uyo Teaching Hospital, Denies Wrongdoing
A developing controversy around an alleged clash at the University of Uyo Teaching Hospital has sparked a strike, public concern, and now an official investigation by the EFCC.
According to reports by cbinews.tv, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has moved to clear the air over allegations that its operatives assaulted health workers at the University of Uyo Teaching Hospital (UUTH) in Akwa Ibom State.
The anti-graft agency firmly denied any claims of assault, arrest, or detention of hospital staff, explaining that its team was at the facility purely for administrative purposes.
Speaking through its Head of Media and Publicity, Dele Oyewale, the EFCC said the visit by operatives from its Uyo Zonal Directorate was strictly to facilitate the authentication of a document—not a tactical operation to carry out arrests.
The commission stressed that contrary to widespread reports, no one was arrested, and any staff who accompanied operatives to the zonal office did so voluntarily and were not detained.
Meanwhile, tension had already escalated in the healthcare sector, as the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) in Akwa Ibom State reportedly embarked on an indefinite strike. The doctors’ action followed claims that EFCC operatives assaulted, arrested, and detained medical personnel during the incident, which allegedly caused panic within the hospital environment.
Addressing the situation further, the EFCC expressed concern over the allegations of brutality, stating it had not seen any physical evidence of injuries or harm to staff who spoke publicly on the matter. However, it confirmed that it has ordered an internal investigation to thoroughly review what happened.
The agency also warned that any staff member found to have violated its Standard Operating Procedures would face appropriate disciplinary action.
While appreciating stakeholders who have called for calm and resolution, the EFCC urged the public not to allow what it described as “fifth columnists” to use the incident to undermine Nigeria’s anti-corruption efforts. It also reaffirmed its commitment to respecting citizens’ rights while carrying out its mandate.
