The EFCC has broken its silence on the death of a suspected cyber fraudster in Makurdi, insisting that the deceased was neither in its custody nor on bail when the incident occurred.
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has clarified the circumstances surrounding the death of a suspected internet fraudster, Asar Michael Sesugh, following reports linking his death to the agency's custody.
According to a statement obtained by **cbinews.tv**, the EFCC said it was necessary to clear the air over recent incidents involving its Makurdi Zonal Directorate in Benue State.
The Commission explained that on 28 April 2026, its operatives arrested 26 suspected cyber fraudsters who were later profiled and remanded by a Magistrate Court pending further investigation.
The EFCC said that on 4 May 2026, three of the suspects requested permission to use the lavatory at the holding facility. However, they allegedly escaped by breaking through the roof of the toilet.
The anti-graft agency stated that several attempts were made to track down and re-arrest the escapees but were initially unsuccessful.
According to the Commission, fresh intelligence received on 21 May indicated that one of the escapees, Sesugh, was hiding around the Kansho area of Makurdi. Operatives were subsequently deployed to the location.
The EFCC claimed that upon spotting the operatives, Sesugh and some alleged cult associates opened fire, leading to a gun battle.
In response, the operatives reportedly returned fire in self-defence, while the suspects fled the scene.
The Commission said Sesugh was later discovered by the roadside in a pool of blood and was immediately rushed to the Police Cottage Hospital in Makurdi, where doctors confirmed him dead.
The incident has since been reported to the Benue State Police Command, which has commenced an investigation.
The EFCC stressed that Sesugh was not in its custody and was not on bail at the time of his death.
"The Commission wishes to state clearly that the dead suspect did not die in custody and was not on bail at any time," the statement said.
While extending condolences to the family of the deceased, the agency warned against attacks on its personnel and reiterated its commitment to protecting its operational security.
The EFCC added that it would continue to carry out its responsibilities in the best interest of the nation.
