He resigned to avoid impeachment, but lawmakers impeached him anyway. Edo Assembly drama is far from over.
The crisis rocking the Edo State House of Assembly is not going away anytime soon, as cbinews.tv reports.
Lawmakers on Monday formally impeached former Speaker Blessing Agbebaku, days after he quit his position.
Agbebaku, who represents Owan West, resigned on Monday August 17, 2026, as moves to remove him gathered steam. Rather than wait out a formal removal process, Agbebaku chose to vacate the speakership.
The House immediately elected Yekini Idaiye, the third term lawmaker representing Akoko Edo 1, as the new Speaker.
But that was not the end. Following his resignation, the House suspended Agbebaku indefinitely and sacked two principal officers. Jonathan Ibhamawu was removed as Majority Leader while Addeh Emankhu Isibor was removed as Deputy Majority Leader.
The new Speaker Yekini Idiaye said Agbebaku was removed because of what he described as poor leadership, alleged corruption and frequent adjournment of the Assembly.
The Assembly has now dissolved all its standing committees and constituted a five-member ad hoc committee to investigate allegations of corruption and financial impropriety against the immediate past Speaker.
This is familiar territory for Edo. The 24-member House has a history of leadership tussles, suspensions and court battles since 2019. Political watchers say the latest probe and reshuffle point to deeper realignments ahead of the next election cycle in the state.
For now, Idaiye says his focus is restoring order and legislative productivity.
