Fears are growing over the deadly Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo after reports emerged that at least six Americans may have been exposed to the virus amid rising deaths and international concern.
The Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo is raising fresh global concerns, with at least six Americans reportedly exposed to the deadly virus, cbinews.tv reports.
According to sources, one American is believed to be showing symptoms, while three others reportedly had high-risk exposure during the outbreak response in eastern DR Congo. However, officials say it is still unclear whether any of them have actually contracted the virus.
The World Health Organization (WHO) has now declared the outbreak a public health emergency of international concern after DR Congo’s health ministry reported about 350 suspected cases and 91 deaths.
The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) confirmed it is assisting in the “safe withdrawal of a small number of Americans who are directly affected,” although it did not reveal the exact number involved.
Health officials say the outbreak is being caused by the Bundibugyo strain of Ebola, a rare strain for which there are currently no approved vaccines or specific treatments.
Meanwhile, Uganda has also recorded two confirmed Ebola cases and one death, according to the CDC.
Reports from health news platform STAT suggest the US government is arranging emergency transport for affected Americans to a quarantine location, with a possible transfer to a US military base in Germany, though this has not been officially confirmed.
Speaking during a press briefing on Sunday, CDC officials avoided direct comments about the Americans reportedly exposed but maintained that the overall risk to the United States remains low.
The US government has also issued a Level Four travel advisory, its highest warning level, urging citizens not to travel to DR Congo.
Although WHO described the outbreak in Ituri province as an international public health emergency, the agency clarified that it does not currently meet the threshold for a global pandemic.
