Political tensions are heating up in the Democratic Republic of Congo as opposition parties unite against plans they say could allow President Félix Tshisekedi to remain in power beyond constitutional limits.
According to cbinews.tv, political tensions are rising in the Democratic Republic of Congo as major opposition parties have formed a coalition to challenge proposed constitutional reforms linked to President Félix Tshisekedi’s administration.
Speaking during a press conference in Kinshasa, opposition leaders accused the government of trying to pave the way for Tshisekedi to remain in office beyond the country’s constitutional two-term limit. The coalition described the move as a serious threat to democracy ahead of future elections.
A top official of the opposition Envol party, Nicolas Lenga, did not hold back in his criticism, describing the constitutional reform proposal as “an act of rebellion against the Republic and a declaration of war on the Congolese people.”
Lenga also called on citizens to defend the constitution, referencing Article 64, which urges Congolese people to resist any attempt to exercise power outside constitutional provisions.
The growing political row follows recent comments by President Tshisekedi suggesting he could seek a third term after his mandate ends in 2028 through a national referendum, despite existing constitutional restrictions.
Meanwhile, Tshisekedi has warned that future elections could be delayed because of the worsening security crisis in eastern DRC, where M23 rebels continue to control key areas, including Goma and Bukavu in the North and South Kivu provinces.
