He stands still for 90 minutes, but Michel Kuka Mboladinga’s return to the World Cup had fans everywhere moving.
DR Congo’s most iconic supporter, Michel Kuka Mboladinga, finally made his 2026 FIFA World Cup debut during the Leopards’ Group K clash with Colombia. He had to sit out their opener because of an Ebola related quarantine, cbinews.tv reports.
Better known as “Lumumba Vea,” Mboladinga is famous for dressing and posing like Patrice Lumumba, the Democratic Republic of Congo’s first prime minister. If you have watched African football, you know the routine. He stands motionless for the whole match with his right arm raised in that unmistakable symbolic gesture.
As cbinews.tv reports, the celebrated fan missed DR Congo’s surprise 1-1 draw with Portugal after being placed under a 21 day quarantine following Ebola outbreaks in his home country. Once he completed the mandatory isolation, he rejoined the Congolese delegation and was at Estadio Akron in Guadalajara for their second Group K fixture.
Mboladinga has described his tribute to Lumumba as a “sign of peace” for his country. He rose to international prominence during the Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco and has since become one of the most recognisable faces in African football.
Before kickoff against Colombia, he was spotted posing for photos with both Congolese and Colombian fans. Then it was straight to business, taking his usual position in the stands to silently back his team.
Sadly, his return did not bring a win for the Leopards. Colombia took it 1-0 thanks to a deflected effort from defender Daniel Muñoz.
Still, Mboladinga’s comeback brought colour and symbolism to DR Congo’s World Cup campaign. Fans in the stadium and viewers around the world were clearly glad to see him back.
