In a significant development, the long-stalled prisoner exchange between the Congolese government and the AFC/M23 rebel group is reportedly gaining momentum.
According to sources, fifteen men linked to the rebel movement have been transferred from prisons in Kinshasa to Beni in the east, where they have been waiting for weeks ahead of the first phase of the swap.
Officials have clarified that the group does not include any senior rebel leaders, and none of the 15 men has been sentenced to death, although other inmates on the broader exchange list are understood to remain on death row.
The process has been stuck for months, with government sources previously citing health concerns as one of the main reasons for the delay.
Now, there is cautious optimism. The International Committee of the Red Cross is expected to oversee the next stage of the handover, raising hopes that this breakthrough could help build much-needed momentum for the wider peace talks.
