DR Congo’s World Cup preparations have taken a major turn after the country cancelled its planned training camp in Kinshasa due to the ongoing Ebola outbreak in the eastern region.
According to cbinews.tv, the Democratic Republic of Congo has cancelled its pre-World Cup training camp in Kinshasa following the deadly Ebola outbreak in the eastern part of the country.
The team has now shifted preparations to Belgium as concerns continue to grow over the outbreak, which reports say has claimed more than 130 lives so far.
The World Health Organization (WHO) has already declared the situation a “public health emergency of international concern”, although it stressed that the outbreak has not reached pandemic level.
Despite the disruption, DR Congo’s national team spokesperson, Jerry Kalemo, confirmed that the country’s planned warm-up matches in Europe will still go ahead as scheduled ahead of the tournament.
The team is expected to face Denmark on 3 June in Belgium before taking on Chile on 9 June in Spain, as they prepare for their first FIFA World Cup appearance since 1974.
Reports also indicate that the United States, one of the World Cup host nations alongside Mexico and Canada, imposed travel restrictions linked to the outbreak. The US public health agency has temporarily barred non-Americans who have recently travelled through DR Congo, Uganda, or South Sudan within the last 21 days.
The latest development has forced the Congolese squad to rethink its preparations just weeks before the global football showpiece kicks off.
