Shettima urges APC aspirants to accept outcome of 2027 primaries...
Vice President Kashim Shettima has cautioned aspirants seeking the ticket of the All Progressives Congress (APC) ahead of the 2027 elections not to undermine the party if they lose in the primaries.
CBI News reports that in a piece titled “2027: Don’t pull down the roof,” Shettima urged party members to prioritise unity despite political differences.
Shettima warned aspirants to resist attempts by external forces to sow discord within the party.
“We must therefore refuse the temptation to be manipulated by the media, by mischief-makers, by vested interests, or by those who profit from division,” he said.
He added that such tactics are often designed to “provoke suspicion, inflame supporters, and turn comrades into adversaries before the real contest even begins.”
The Vice President emphasised that competition is inherent in politics, noting that not all aspirants can emerge as candidates.
“Many will consult. Many will spend. Many will hope. Many will be encouraged… But at the end of the process, only one name will be submitted,” he said.
“That outcome, however painful to others, is not always an injustice. It is often the unavoidable arithmetic of democracy.”
Shettima stressed that the true measure of leadership lies in how politicians handle defeat.
“The true test is not how loudly he campaigns when the wind is behind him… It takes character to manage disappointment,” he stated.
Addressing concerns over endorsements within the party, Shettima said such practices are part of politics but must not be abused.
“Endorsements are not strange to politics… But preference must never become provocation. Influence must never become intimidation,” he said.
He urged party leaders to act with fairness and ensure all aspirants are treated with dignity.
The Vice President concluded by calling for unity within the APC, warning that internal divisions could weaken the party ahead of the general elections.
“Leadership demands that we ask: Who benefits when brothers fight? Who gains when a party weakens itself before facing the opposition?” he queried.
