It's official-ish - Belgium have found their next boss, and it's a big name with serious history in Belgian football.

Here we go! Belgium are set to appoint Mark van Bommel as their new head coach.

According to cbinews.tv, the Dutchman has agreed a deal that will keep him in charge of the Red Devils until June 2028.

He's lined up to replace Rudi Garcia, but not just yet. Van Bommel will officially take over after Belgium's 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign.

While the contracts haven't actually been signed, we're told all parties have reached a full agreement. The official announcement is expected as soon as the final paperwork is sorted.

The news was first broken by transfer guru Fabrizio Romano on X on Wednesday, who posted: “Mark van Bommel as new Belgium head coach, here we go! Deal in place until June 2028 for van Bommel, ready to replace Rudi Garcia.”

It’s a huge move for Van Bommel, as this will be his first ever job in international management.

The former Netherlands captain is no stranger to the dugout, of course. He’s previously managed PSV Eindhoven, VfL Wolfsburg and, crucially, Royal Antwerp – where he delivered that historic league and cup double in the 2022/23 season. He knows Belgian football inside out.

Belgium will be hoping he is the man to lead them into a fresh era. After their 2026 World Cup run ended in a quarter-final defeat to Spain – plenty of flashes of brilliance but just falling short – the focus is now firmly on rebuilding and getting ready for the UEFA Euro 2028 qualifiers.

It really does feel like a new chapter for the Red Devils as they look to build on that golden generation and create a side that can genuinely mix it with the world's best again.
