Safety concerns and venue change follow Middle East conflict disruption.
The Diamond League athletics meeting in Doha has been delayed by six weeks and will now be held on June 19, organisers confirmed on Wednesday, citing the ongoing war in the Middle East.
A two week ceasefire between the United States and Iran was agreed on Tuesday after a conflict that has caused thousands of deaths and shaken the global economy.
Organisers had earlier maintained that the season opening meet would proceed on May 8, but later opted for a postponement.
They said the decision was taken in the interest of athlete and spectator safety and added that the event will go ahead on the new date if conditions permit.
The competition will also shift from Qatar Sports Club to Khalifa International Stadium to mitigate higher temperatures. The climate controlled venue hosted the 2019 World Athletics Championships and matches during the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
The Diamond League is track and field’s premier one day meeting series, featuring 15 events across 13 countries and four continents.
Shanghai will now host the opening meet of the season on May 16.
CBI News reports that he conflict has disrupted several major sporting events in the region. Formula One races in Bahrain and Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, scheduled for mid April, have been cancelled.
In football, the Finalissima between Spain and Argentina, planned for March 27 in Qatar, was also called off.
Other affected events include the Qatar motorcycling Grand Prix, postponed to November 8, and a gymnastics World Cup event in Doha that was cancelled.
However, a major horse racing event in Dubai, highlighted by the Dubai World Cup and offering 30.5 million dollars in prize money, went ahead as scheduled on March 28.
