Has Father Time finally caught Novak Djokovic?
The 39 year old great broke down in tears during a brutal first round defeat at the US Open, reports cbinews.tv.
The 24 time Grand Slam champion, seeded four, lost 7-6 (7 5) 5 -7 4-6 6 -2 6 -1 to Argentina’s Mariano Navone in humid New York. He was seen vomiting into a towel bin and struggling for breath throughout.
It is historic for the wrong reasons. Djokovic had never lost first round at Flushing Meadows before and had not lost first round at any Slam since 2006. That is 77 Slams without an early exit.
He revealed a longstanding health issue in oppressive conditions. He said his body starts to collapse with cramping and pain, similar to his early exit in Cincinnati two weeks ago.
The loss ends his latest bid for a record 25th major that would move him clear of Margaret Court. With Jannik Sinner out injured and Carlos Alcaraz returning from a wrist injury, many felt this was a big chance.
For world number 49 Navone, it is the biggest win of his career. For Djokovic, it was a worrying sight.
