Disu is Nigeria's 23rd indigenous Inspector-General of Police..
Nigeria's Inspector-General of Police, Tunji Disu, on Wednesday set up an eight-member committee to coordinate the implementation of state policing and advance his strategic vision for the Nigeria Police Force, shortly after his confirmation as the 23rd indigenous IGP.
The meeting marked his first official engagement with senior officers since the Nigeria Police Council unanimously approved his appointment, clearing the path for his swearing-in by President Bola Tinubu at the Presidential Villa.
Professor Olu Ogunsakin was appointed chairman of the committee tasked with steering the state police framework.
Speaking to some senior officers of the force, the IGP underscored that leadership goes beyond holding office and is rooted in responsibility, integrity, and service. He called on officers to uphold professionalism, transparency, and accountability in their duties across all commands nationwide.
Nigeria's President Bola Tinubu appointed Disu as acting inspector-general on Feb. 24, 2026, following the resignation of his predecessor Kayode Egbetokun. The appointment was later endorsed by the Nigeria Police Council, clearing the way for his swearing-in at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.
Disu’s elevation comes amid heightened security concerns, including rising kidnappings, banditry and community attacks, as the government pushes broader reforms aimed at decentralising policing powers.
With the committee now in place, the Inspector-General signalled a decisive start to what he described as a new phase for the force. As consultations begin and frameworks take shape, attention will be on how swiftly and effectively the proposed state policing structure translates into improved security and renewed public confidence across the country.
