It was last sold by Diana herself in 1997 among 79 dresses to raise money for cancer and Aids charities. Glasgow buyer Briege Mackenzie paid £39,098, saying she could not fit in it but wanted to support Children First.

Briege now says selling after her husband Graeme died feels poignant, noting that bidding together was one of the great days of their life. Part of the proceeds will go to Royal Edinburgh Hospital.

Diana's black sheep jumper sold for £920,000 in 2023 and her Jaguar from that night sold for £66,250 this year.

Sotheby's will tour the dress to London 18 to 24 September, then Hong Kong in October, Geneva in November, before the New York sale on 9 December. A rare 1997 catalogue signed by Diana and Stambolian, crediting Prince William for the auction idea, will be sold with it.
