DHQ says talks reviewed existing security cooperation and identified new areas for future military collaboration.
The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has disclosed that Nigeria and the United States Armed Forces have held high-level discussions on strengthening defence cooperation, including joint military exercises, training, technology support and other forms of assistance.
This was contained in a statement issued by the Director of Defence Information, Major General Samaila Uba, following a visit to Abuja by the United States Africa Command (AFRICOM) Commander, General Anderson.
According to the statement, General Anderson met with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu, Minister of Defence, Gen Christopher Musa (Rtd), Chief of Defence Staff, General Olufemi Oluyede, Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen Waidi Shaibu, and other senior military officers.
CBI News reports that Major General Uba said the engagement provided an opportunity for both countries to review existing security cooperation and identify areas for future collaboration.
He explained that discussions focused on capacity building through military training, future force development, and real-world joint exercises aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s overall security framework.
“The engagements also explored other unique capabilities that the United States could provide to support Nigeria’s military operations,” Uba said.
Providing further details, the DHQ spokesman stated: “Nigeria and the United States deepened their security partnership during US Africa Command Commander Gen Anderson’s visit to Abuja, Feb 8–9.
“During the visit, Gen Anderson was received by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu; National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu; Minister of Defence, Gen Christopher Musa (Retired); Chief of Defence Staff Gen Olufemi Oluyede; Chief of Army Staff Lt Gen Waidi Shaibu and other senior officials where he discussed shared security interests and the two nation’s partnership in countering terrorist organizations that threaten Nigerians, the United States, the region, and the world.”
He added that both sides also discussed military training programmes and laid the groundwork for future force development, real-world training and joint exercises, as well as other specialised support the US could offer.
Major General Uba further revealed that General Anderson visited the joint US–Nigeria intelligence fusion cell, which plays a key role in supporting Nigeria’s intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR) operations.
“Gen Anderson visited the joint US–Nigeria intelligence fusion cell, which bolsters Nigeria’s intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance capabilities and continues to build enduring capacity to enable real-time operational results,” he said.
According to him, the AFRICOM commander interacted with senior Nigerian security officials and reaffirmed the United States’ commitment to supporting Nigerian-led solutions through intelligence sharing and technical advisory support.
“He reaffirmed the United States’ commitment to enabling Nigerian-led solutions through intelligence-sharing and technical advising that enhance Nigeria’s independent operational capability,” Uba added.
The Defence Headquarters noted that the discussions form part of ongoing efforts by both countries to deepen defence cooperation and jointly address shared security challenges.
The visit comes shortly after the US AFRICOM announced that a small US force had been deployed to Nigeria, further underscoring the growing security partnership between both nations.
