Defence Headquarters moves to harmonise doctrine, boost interoperability and strengthen West African military readiness through capacity building workshop.
The Defence Headquarters has concluded a four-day Capacity Building and Regional Doctrine Workshop aimed at harmonising operational concepts and strengthening joint preparedness among West African armed forces.
The workshop, organised by the Joint Doctrine and Warfare Centre, brought together military personnel from Nigeria, Ghana, Gambia, Senegal and Sierra Leone, alongside representatives of Economic Community of West African States and resource persons from the British Defence Staff (West Africa).
In a statement by Maj.-Gen. Samaila Uba, Director of Defence Information, the Chief of Defence Staff, Olufemi Oluyede, said the initiative was designed to close doctrinal gaps and enhance preparedness for evolving threats such as asymmetric warfare, transnational crimes and multi-domain operations.
Represented by AVM Francis Edosa, Oluyede noted that the establishment of the Joint Doctrine and Warfare Centre was a strategic move to institutionalise doctrine development and strengthen operational effectiveness across the services.
He emphasised that shared doctrinal frameworks were essential for improving interoperability and advancing collective security within the region, while commending ECOWAS and the British Defence Staff for their support.
The Director-General of the centre, Maj.-Gen. Anede Edet, explained that the programme was conducted in two phases, targeting Nigerian personnel and regional participants to build a tri-service cadre of doctrine writers, editors and validators.
According to Edet, the workshop will enhance joint operations, promote multi-agency cooperation and ensure that lessons learned are reflected in doctrinal publications guiding strategy and policy.
CBI News reports that he described the workshop’s conclusion as a milestone in efforts to deepen regional partnerships and position West African forces to effectively tackle complex security challenges.
