36 officers face court martial over coup plot as military to continue closed-door trial of suspects May 8...
The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has announced that the ongoing court martial of military officers accused of plotting a coup will resume on May 8.
CBI News reports that the spokesman for the DHQ, Samaila Uba, disclosed this in an interview, noting that at least 36 officers are currently facing trial over their alleged involvement in the failed plot.
The proceedings, which began last week in Abuja, are being held at a military facility under tight security.
According to the DHQ, subsequent sittings of the court martial will continue without public or media access.
The spokesman confirmed that the next hearing will also be conducted behind closed doors.
The court martial was inaugurated last Friday, with the accused officers arraigned before a panel of military judges.
The trial is regarded as one of the most significant military prosecutions in recent years.
Meanwhile, six civilians are being tried separately at the Federal High Court in Abuja over their alleged roles in the same plot.
The defendants have pleaded not guilty to the charges against them.
Nigeria has experienced several military coups since gaining independence from United Kingdom in 1960.
However, the country has maintained uninterrupted democratic rule since 1999.
