Leadership change comes as the luxury house navigates governance shifts and market pressures.
One of the cofounders of Italian luxury brand Dolce and Gabbana, Stefano Gabbana, has stepped down as chairman but will remain in his creative role, the company said Friday.
The company said Gabbana, 63, resigned from his corporate positions as of January 1 as part of what it described as a natural process of organisational and governance evolution.
The new chairman is Chief Executive Alfonso Dolce, the brother of co designer Domenico Dolce, according to a corporate filing from January.
Gabbana, who launched the label with Dolce in 1985, had his departure first reported by Bloomberg.
He is also considering options for his 40 percent stake in the company as it enters a new round of negotiations with bank lenders to refinance 450 million euros or 525 million dollars of debt, Bloomberg reported.
The company said it had nothing to add on the reported debt issue, noting that negotiations with banks are still ongoing.
Many top fashion brands have faced pressure in recent years due to a slowdown in the luxury market.
Both Dolce and Gabbana appeared on the runway with guest Madonna after the brand’s women’s ready to wear show at Milan Fashion Week in February.
Dolce and Gabbana remain one of fashion’s most successful design partnerships, drawing on Dolce’s Sicilian roots to create form fitting designs worn by stars including Madonna and Monica Bellucci.
