Nigeria’s not crime-free yet, but the defence minister reckons we’re making real headway. Here’s what he told Arise TV about terrorism, kidnappings, and why “get-rich-quick” culture is part of the problem.

So, here’s the gist from Defence Minister Christopher Musa, as reported by cbinews.tv. He was on Arise Television Friday and gave Nigeria’s security efforts a solid 65 to 70 percent score. His take? Terrorism has “drastically reduced” across the country.

Now, he’s not saying crime’s gone completely. “No nation is totally free from crime and criminality,” Musa admitted. But compared to previous years, things have improved quite a bit. Acts of terrorism and kidnapping still happen, sure — but not like before.

What’s behind the lingering insecurity? Musa pointed the finger at two things: a breakdown in family values and poor social orientation. He didn’t mince words — he’s seen fathers kidnapping children, kids kidnapping each other, even brothers going after sisters. “It tells you that there’s something wrong with the family,” he said, adding that we need to look inward and rebuild those values.

Education came up too. His message to Nigerians: hard work pays, shortcuts don’t. A lot of the people involved in kidnappings are just chasing fast money, he argued.

And then there’s the politics angle. Musa suggested some of these crimes might be sabotage — designed to make the government look weak or make Nigeria seem ungovernable. He questioned the logic behind kidnappers demanding one billion naira from people who clearly it don’t have: “Who are you expecting to pay that money?”

Still, he insists the armed forces, and security agencies are working “tirelessly” to tackle insecurity. And he gave a shout-out to Nigerians, saying public support is way better now than it used to be. “We’re making more inroads,” he added.
