Six years after the death of Chadwick Boseman, Marvel Studios has officially unveiled British actor David Jonsson as the new Black Panther. The announcement, made at Comic-Con in San Diego, confirms a new chapter for the beloved superhero franchise. cbinews.tv reports.

Marvel Studios has officially introduced British actor David Jonsson as the next Black Panther, marking a new era for one of the Marvel Cinematic Universe's most iconic characters.

cbinews.tv reports that the announcement was made during Marvel Studios' Hall H panel at Comic-Con in San Diego, where the studio also confirmed that "Black Panther 3" will hit cinemas on 15 December 2028.

The 32-year-old actor will take on the role of Prince T'Challa II, also known as Toussaint, the son of the late King T'Challa and Nakia, portrayed by Lupita Nyong'o.

Fans were first introduced to the character as a young boy in the closing moments of "Black Panther: Wakanda Forever" in 2022. The upcoming film will follow his journey into adulthood as he embraces his destiny.

Jonsson has quickly established himself as one of Britain's rising stars, following acclaimed performances in "Alien: Romulus," "The Long Walk," the BBC and HBO drama "Industry," and the romantic comedy "Rye Lane."

The announcement comes six years after the passing of Chadwick Boseman, who died in 2020 at the age of 43 following a private battle with colon cancer.

Boseman's portrayal of King T'Challa in the 2018 blockbuster "Black Panther"nleft a lasting impact on audiences around the world. The film grossed more than $1.3 billion globally and became the first superhero movie to receive a Best Picture nomination at the Academy Awards.

Rather than recast Boseman's character after his death, Marvel chose a different path. In "Black Panther: Wakanda Forever," Letitia Wright's character, Shuri, inherited the Black Panther mantle, a performance that contributed to Angela Bassett becoming the first actor in a Marvel film to earn an Oscar nomination.

Marvel has now confirmed that Letitia Wright will return as Shuri in "Black Panther 3," alongside Winston Duke, who reprises his role as M'Baku.

The film will also feature Denzel Washington, making his Marvel Cinematic Universe debut in a role that has yet to be revealed.

Jonsson's casting brings an end to years of speculation about the future of the Black Panther franchise, with Marvel choosing to continue the legacy through T'Challa's son rather than replacing Boseman's original character.

Award-winning filmmaker Ryan Coogler is also returning to direct the third instalment, completing the trilogy that began with the groundbreaking 2018 film.
