Thousands displaced and hundreds of homes destroyed as storm lashes east coast.
At least 62 people have died and 13 are missing following Cyclone Gezani, which struck Madagascar last week, the country’s disaster agency reported on Thursday. The previous death toll stood at 59 on February 10.
Most fatalities occurred in the port city of Toamasina on the east coast, Madagascar’s second‑largest city with around 400,000 residents.
The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs said 35,000 people have been forced from their homes and 382,000 require urgent assistance.
CBI News reports that the cyclone destroyed 25,000 houses and more than 750 school classrooms.
Cyclone Gezani then moved toward Mozambique, where at least four people died.
The storm did not make landfall, staying about 50 kilometres from the coast, but battered the southern city of Inhambane and surrounding areas with winds reaching 215 kilometres per hour.
