It is a major win for border security! The Nigeria Customs Service has just taken a staggering N2 billion worth of illicit drugs off the streets of Ogun State.

In a massive operation, officers of the Nigeria Customs Service, Ogun 1 Area Command, Idiroko, have intercepted 6,035 wraps of cannabis sativa with an estimated Duty Paid Value of N2,087,603,186.76.

The seizure was made across different locations in the state, as disclosed by the Area Comptroller, Mr Olukayode Afeni, during a formal handover ceremony on Thursday in Idiroko.

The illicit drugs were handed over to Mr Olaniyi Ekundayo, Commander of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Idiroko Special Area Command, for further investigation. According to Comptroller Afeni, the handover is in line with standard operating procedures and the legal framework.

He raised a serious alarm over the type of cannabis seized. According to him, statistics show that the popular strain known as 'Ghana Loud' is extremely dangerous and has been linked to acute psychosis, severe cardiovascular distress, rapid addiction, and long-term mental health degradation.

He also warned that the high profit from this trade is fuelling violent criminal networks, human trafficking, and the illegal proliferation of arms across our borders. He noted that smuggling such dangerous variants like Ghana Loud and Colorado to young people could destabilise schools and local communities.

Comptroller Afeni revealed that from January to date, his command has handed over a total of 32,412 parcels of hard drugs and 92 sacks of raw cannabis sativa to the NDLEA Idiroko Special Command.

He stressed that the fight against drug smuggling is a collective responsibility and reaffirmed his command's commitment to securing the borders and safeguarding the nation's future. He also issued a stern warning to traffickers to desist from the illicit business, as the command will continue to seize illegal goods and bring perpetrators to their knees.

In response, the NDLEA Commander, who was represented by Adewale Fagbohun, a Director in Narcotics, commended the Customs Service for their diligence and resilience in securing the country's borders. He reaffirmed the NDLEA's commitment to strengthening its partnership with Customs and other agencies to disrupt drug smuggling activities.
