Assembly set up committee to investigate assault allegations against lawmaker...
The Cross River State House of Assembly has suspended the lawmaker representing Obubra I Constituency, Ovat Agbor, indefinitely over allegations that he assaulted his wife.
The decision followed reports accusing the lawmaker of engaging in violent conduct against his spouse.
The spokesperson to the Speaker of the Assembly, Matthew Okachie, disclosed the development in a statement issued on Thursday.
According to the statement, the resolution was reached during plenary after a motion moved by Davies Etta and seconded by Francis Asuquo.
“After deliberations, the House resolved that Mr Agbor be placed on indefinite suspension from all legislative activities,” the statement read.
The Assembly described the alleged conduct as unacceptable and inconsistent with the ethical standards expected of lawmakers.
CBI News reports that the House also approved the constitution of a committee to investigate the allegations and submit its findings for further legislative action.
Following the resolution, the lawmaker was escorted out of the chamber by the Sergeant-at-Arms.
The Speaker of the Assembly, Elvert Ayambem, said the legislature remained committed to discipline and integrity.
He added that lawmakers must always conduct themselves in a manner that reflects the trust placed in them by their constituents.
The suspension, according to the Assembly, will remain in effect pending the outcome of the committee’s investigation.
Meanwhile, a video circulating on Facebook showed a woman believed to be the victim with bruises on her face, including swollen eyes and lips.
The footage triggered outrage online, with many social media users questioning the alleged incident.
The lawmaker’s wife, Glory Agbor, in a statement on Thursday, called for privacy and announced her withdrawal from the legislators’ wives association.
She said the issue had been resolved within the family.
She said, “There is no doubt that some people have tried to paint the name of my family in a bad light, but I stand here to vehemently debunk that view against my family and state it clearly that my husband and I are at peace with each other.
“Even though issues arose, we have been able to amicably resolve our differences. As I said, this is my family, and no marriage is totally perfect. Please leave my family alone.”
Meanwhile, the Cross River State Governor, Bassey Otu, and his wife, Eyoanwan Otu, have also criticised the alleged actions, describing them as irresponsible.
