Fresh political drama is unfolding in Abuja as a Federal High Court prepares to hear a lawsuit aimed at blocking former President Goodluck Jonathan from contesting the 2027 presidential election over constitutional eligibility concerns.
A Federal High Court in Abuja is set to hear a suit seeking to restrain former Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan from participating in the 2027 Nigerian Presidential Election.
CBI News notes that the case, scheduled for hearing on Friday, was instituted by lawyer Johnmary Jideobi, who is asking the court to declare Jonathan constitutionally ineligible to contest for the presidency again.
On April 28, Justice Peter Lifu directed that hearing notices be served on all defendants after they failed to file responses to the suit.
The plaintiff is urging the court to interpret constitutional provisions regarding presidential tenure and determine whether Jonathan can legally return to contest for Nigeria’s highest office.
Jonathan, who became president in 2010 following the death of former President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua, later won the 2011 presidential election and served until 2015 when he lost his re-election bid to former President Muhammadu Buhari.
The suit is expected to reignite debate over constitutional term limits and Jonathan’s political future ahead of the 2027 elections.
