Federal High Court sets May 18 for trial of Innocent Chukwuma over alleged coup post.
The Federal High Court on Monday fixed May 18 for the trial of a man, Innocent Chukwuma, accused of urging the military to overthrow the government of President Bola Tinubu through a social media post.
CBI News reports that Justice Joyce Abdulmalik adjourned the case after the prosecution requested additional time to review the case file.
At the resumed hearing, prosecuting counsel David Kaswe informed the court that he had only recently been assigned to the matter, explaining that the case file had been transferred to his office by the Department of State Services (DSS).
He requested time to study the documents before proceeding with the trial. Following the request, the court adjourned the matter to May 18 and 19 for trial.
Chukwuma was arraigned over an alleged inciting post on social media.
Operatives of the DSS reportedly traced and arrested him in Oyigbo, Port Harcourt.
The charge, marked FHC/ABJ/CR/610/2025, is titled Federal Republic of Nigeria vs. Innocent Chukwuemeka Onukwume.
According to the charge, the defendant used his handle, “@TheAgroman,” on the social media platform 𝕏 to call for a military takeover in Nigeria.
In one post cited in court, Chukwuma allegedly wrote: “A coup in Nigeria is needed. Dispose of APC, suspend the Nigerian Government, and join the AES. That is all we need now.”
Authorities allege that the statement was capable of inciting the military to overthrow the elected government.
