Drama unfolded at the Federal High Court in Abuja as a judge dismissed a suit aimed at stopping Senator Ireti Kingibe from taking part in ADC activities — and then slammed the plaintiffs and their lawyer with a staggering ₦20 million fine.

According to cbinews.tv, the Federal High Court in Abuja has struck out a suit filed against Senator Ireti Kingibe over her alleged suspension from the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

Justice Peter Odo Lifu ruled that issues relating to discipline and suspension within a political party are strictly internal matters and do not require the intervention of the court.

Senator Kingibe, who represents the FCT in the Senate, was reportedly suspended by the ADC Wuse Ward Executive on March 10 over allegations of anti-party activities and disregard for the party’s constitution.

Two ADC members, Okezuo Godfrey Anayo and Isaiah Ojonugwa Samuel, had approached the court asking for an order restraining the senator from presenting herself as an ADC member or participating in any party-related activities pending the determination of the case.

They also accused her of misconduct, anti-party activities and confiscating ward records.

But Justice Lifu questioned why those who carried out the suspension were now seeking the court’s validation of their own decision. He maintained that if anyone should challenge the suspension, it ought to be Senator Kingibe herself.

Describing the suit as “frivolous, baseless and unfounded”, the judge invoked Sections 82 and 83 of the Electoral Act and ordered the plaintiffs to pay ₦10 million in damages to Senator Kingibe.

In addition, the lawyer who filed the suit was also fined ₦10 million, bringing the total penalty to ₦20 million.
